Vipers Sports Club failed the chance to go top of the SUPL log after drawing 1-1 at home to table leaders Uganda Revenue Authority Football Club but salvaged a stalemate after Yunus Ssentamu’s strike cancelled out Abang Cromwell Rwothomio’s opener at St Mary’s stadium on Wednesday evening.
The draw left Tax Collectors top of the log with 51 points after 23 Startimes Uganda Premier League games, one ahead of second-placed Vipers SC.
Fred Kajoba made unchanged line-up from the first starting lineup that beat KCCA 2-1 at MTN Omondi while Sam Simbwa made two changes from the team that beat Onduparaka FC 3-1 at Arena of Vision with the gaffer introducing Sserubiri Ivan and Abang Cromwell for Brain Nkuubi and Joacim Ojera respectively.
Richard Basangwa could have put the hosts ahead but his header from Aziz Kayondo’s cross was well save by URA FC custodian Hannington Ssebwalunya in the 20th minute.
Hudu Mulukyi forced Vipers custodian Fabien Mutombora to produce a brilliant save after heading Sseruyidde Moses’ delivery from a corner kick in the 30 minutes.
Cromwell then opened the lead for visitors after combining with URA FC captain Shafiq Kagimu before beating Vipers’ defender Livingstone Mulondo to fire home past Mutombora for a 1-0 lead at the interval.
Vipers improved in the second stanza as Ceasor Manzoki strongly headed Orit’s chip but Hannington stood tall in between his sticks to deny the Congolese striker in the 48 minutes.
Karim Watambala came close to the equalizer but his effort in the 6oth minute went over the cross bar.
Vipers deservedly leveled matters through leading top scorer Yunus Ssentamu who scored his 14th goal of the season after picking from Manzoki’s header for a 1-1 draw.
The stalemate saw URA FC remain at the top of the log with 51 points, one above second-placed Vipers Sports Club who are with 50 points after 23 games.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday May 15 when URA FC host Police FC at Arena of Vision while Vipers SC face Sports Club Villa at Bombo Military Ground.
